Is it moxie? We think so.

Taking the leap to digital was a challenge we met. The improvements don't stop there

By By Sara Zailskas, Assistant Managing Editor January 14, 2009

Surprise! We've done it again. It's been a year since Housing Giants debuted as a digital-only magazine, and we've already tweaked the way we look and how we present our information.

It's all with you in mind. Page through this issue to find a more reader-friendly business magazine:

Our News & Moves Section now delivers links — in a scannable, digestible format — to industry news you should know. You'll find it reads as a news digest for the housing industry. We hope you'll spot interesting stories you wouldn't otherwise.

People to Know, a new feature in every couple issues, will delve into the figures who shape the housing industry. We'll go beyond builders to profile leaders who have influenced everything from housing design to government policy. We debut this month with a discussion with Nicolas P. Retsinas, the director of the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University whose economic analysis and expertise guides decisions nationwide.

If you haven't seen it already, use the navigational menu we added to the left side of every page. This is an easier way to travel between departments.

VIDEO EDITORIAL
The inveterate optimist (Bill Lurz) offers his take on the new administration.

And check out the size of these pages! We realized that we were still designing our pages to mimic a print magazine — even though you read us on a computer screen that doesn't have a book spine. We've eliminated that line in the center of the page entirely so we can run larger pictures and treat the page as an entire entity — not two separate pages shmooshed together on one screen. Kudos to our art director, Paula Girshman, for taking us here.

We understand that some of you might still be adjusting to our new format, and we thank you for your patience. Remember how painful it was to use the keypad on your first cell phone? Or even how awkward the first video games' joysticks were? The design of those gadgets improved for the better throughout the years, and we're doing the same. In a sense, we're responding to the market as you are doing in your businesses now.

As always, I welcome your feedback, good or bad (but hopefully polite). You can reach me at 630/288-8197 or sara.zailskas@reedbusiness.com. Thanks for reading.
