Bringing Outside In

In a clever twist, interior designer Debbie Grant brought exterior detailing indoors to add an Italian villa influence to this custom home in Richmond, Va.

Faux finishes produce a powder room packed with character in a compact space. Artificial limestone blocks were created using stripping tape and successive layers of Dryvit's EIFS applied to the wall and then faux-painted. For the mirror surround and columns, a foam form was sculpted, sprayed with the stucco finish and then sealed before being applied to the wall. The finished product is hard, durable and easy to clean with a vacuum and light dusting. Imported from Italy, the sink is made of crushed marble honed to a smooth finish. A wrought-iron strap secures the sink assembly to the wall.

In a clever twist, interior designer Debbie Grant brought exterior detailing indoors to add an Italian villa influence to this custom home in Richmond, Va.

Using Dryvit's exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS), a product more commonly applied to outdoor surfaces for a stucco appearance, Grant produced faux-limestone block walls, columns, ledges, fireplace surrounds and archways that give the interior living spaces elegance. The simulated carved-stone details enhance numerous rooms throughout the 3,700-square-foot house, including the entry foyer, formal entertaining spaces and the family room.

In the main-floor powder room, architectural detailing creates visual interest and depth while adding dimension to a narrow, compact space. A recessed niche above the commode, a mirror over the sink and a floor-to-ceiling mirror framed by faux columns on the interior wall make the room appear larger and more inviting. "Adding mirrors increases the sense of space and keeps the room from looking dull," Grant says.

Grant calls the powder room a key space in any home because primarily guests use it. "My design goal for a powder room is always to create a little jewel box using design elements taken from elsewhere in the home," she says. "In this case, Tuscany provided the inspiration."
