Interior designer, Karen Butera, skipped the formalities when she developed the plan for the fabulous kitchen in this 7,200-square-foot, former Street of Dreams home outside Las Vegas. "I wanted this kitchen to really feel like the heart of the home," she says. Butera's design for the space features a mix of classic and contemporary finishes, several seating areas, and a multi-functional center island all carefully selected to appeal to the luxury-loving, but laid-back lifestyle of the area's high-end buyer.

Given virtually a clean slate to work with from builder Sun West Custom Homes, and knowing that the project was a spec-built show home, Butera says her goal was to create a space that complements the way people live and entertain today. "I wanted to not only be comfortable but also to be a true chef's kitchen."

"People congregate in kitchens these days," she says, "so it was important to design the space to accommodate this. I saw the large island as a particularly important feature because it provides not only necessary counter space, but also additional seating." In fact, this kitchen features three separate seating areas including the island, an angled snack bar, and a separate breakfast nook.

Butera also took advantage of the open design of the floorplan to create a seamless connection between the kitchen, nook, and adjoining family room through a consistent palette of colors and materials. "I deliberately selected neutral colors for the home's interior so that they would create a soothing atmosphere. This home has really spectacular views of the Las Vegas city lights and I did not want to detract from them."

The entire space features a distinctive drywall-coffered ceiling intersected by dropped T-beams. Uplighting installed in the dropped beams accents a leather finish inside the coffers selected to complement the color of the kitchen and family room's wood cabinetry. "This dramatic ceiling flows throughout the interior and even extends outdoors to the pool terrace so that all of these spaces seem to blend together," Butera says.
