The upper level of this Larkspur, Colo., home contains his and hers home offices with a powder room in between. But the layout posed an architectural challenge early in the building process: The only access to her office was by walking through his office.
As a solution, the designers added an interior wall to create a hallway that provides access to both home offices and keeps each private from the other. They then decided to turn the hallway into a library.
“The goal was to create a glamorous vintage Hollywood feeling, surrounded by the most beautiful collection of real books!” the design statement says. “Most all of these books are recycled library books that had been rebound with beautiful leathers and metallic papers.”
The designer used the full height of the 18-foot vaulted ceiling and ran a line of shelves all the way up the diagonal, leaving a large triangular display area to break up the bookshelves and provide space for a 54-inch-tall pulley sconce. Solid, natural walnut tops the counter, and the walls and shelves are painted a deep teal for drama. Oversized crystal handles and brass backplates add a finishing touch to the lower cabinets.
