Building Fast and Slow
Minarc is rebuilding Palisades homes in steel. The Iceland-born architects behind the Santa Monica firm are among those working in the fire zone, and they're pushing back on the idea that rebuilding means building back the same way.
Most single-family construction in high-risk areas is still wood frame, they say, while the commercial buildings and multi-family structures nearby aren't. Clearly, the industry has been incredibly resistant to change, but the pair says they're starting to see a shift.
Developments are happening much quicker in AI, of course. And, so, this week we talk with Ashley Sheaffer on how she's absorbed AI into her design-remodeling firm (and what happened when they stopped treating it like a search engine and started treating it like a new hire).
We'll be looking at all of these shifts at our Women in Residential Construction Conference when we come together online for this virtual event September 29 and 30. Save the date, and sign up to get notified when registration opens (tap Notify Me!).
