Builder in 5 is our five-question series with the minds behind standout custom homes.

In this edition of our Builder in 5 series, custom builder John Cannon of Sarasota, Fla.-based John Cannon Homes shares how leading with transparency and prioritizing quality helps his firm stand out. For Cannon, the goal is not to simply build a home, but to build one defined by excellence and truly aligned with the client's lifestyle.

1. Tell us about your approach to custom home building. What does your process look like with a new client?

John Cannon: Our approach is rooted in personalization, transparency, and craftsmanship. Every home begins with listening and understanding how our clients live, entertain, and envision their future. From there, we guide them through a collaborative design-build process that integrates architecture, interior design, and construction from the onset.

Typically, we begin with a discovery phase, followed by conceptual design to ensure alignment early on. Once the vision is defined, our in-house team works closely with the client through selections, permitting, and construction, maintaining clear communication at every stage. The goal is to deliver not just a home, but a seamless and enjoyable experience, one where the end result reflects both the client’s lifestyle and our standard of excellence.

2. What trends are you seeing with luxury clients today? And how do these shifts influence your approach?

Cannon: Luxury clients are prioritizing livability as much as aesthetics. There’s a strong demand for indoor-outdoor integration, wellness-focused spaces, and flexible layouts that accommodate multigenerational living or remote work. We’re also seeing increased interest in privacy, resilience, and smart home technology that enhances convenience without compromising design.

These trends influence our approach by reinforcing the importance of thoughtful planning. We’re designing homes that feel timeless but function for modern life with spaces that are both sophisticated and highly personalized. It’s less about following trends and more about interpreting them in a way that adds lasting value.

3. What is a decision you made early on in your career that still defines how you work today?

Cannon: Early in my career, I made the decision to prioritize quality over volume. That commitment has shaped every aspect of how we operate, from the trades we partner with to the level of detail we bring to each home. It’s allowed us to build a reputation based on trust, consistency, and long-term relationships rather than short-term gains.

4. What is a risk you took on a project that paid off? What did you learn from that experience?

Cannon: One risk that stands out was embracing a more contemporary architectural style in a market traditionally dominated by more coastal designs. It required a leap of faith, not only in design but in how we positioned it to our clients and the community.

The result exceeded expectations. It attracted a new segment of buyers and expanded our portfolio in a meaningful way. What we learned is that innovation, when executed thoughtfully, can elevate a brand and open new opportunities. It reinforced the importance of evolving while staying true to our core values

5. What is a small detail you obsess over that clients likely wouldn’t think to ask about?

Cannon: We pay close attention to how spaces feel, not just how they look. One detail we obsess over is the alignment and proportion of architectural elements with things like ceiling heights relative to room size, sightlines through a home, and how natural light moves throughout the day.

These are subtle details that clients may not specifically request, but they have a profound impact on the overall experience of the home. When done right, they create a sense of balance and comfort that clients immediately feel, even if they can’t quite articulate why.
