In My Own Words: Dan DeJiacomo Custom Homes

This custom builder talks about windows, subfloors, fireplaces, plumbing and mold inhibitors.

By Dan DeJiacomo, President, Big Canoe, Ga. December 31, 2006
This article first appeared in the CB January 2007 issue of Custom Builder.

Jeld-Wen Clad-Wood Windows

The Builders clad-wood windows from Jeld-Wen feature the company's AuraLast wood treatment and Low-E insulating glass in most common window sizes. Divided lite patterns and styles — including double-hung, casement, awning and radius windows — are available. An integrated nailing fin for added strength is included. Colors include brilliant white, French vanilla, desert sand and chestnut bronze. Click here for more information

IN MY OWN WORDS

"Homeowners like the clad product with the baked-on exterior finish for the maintenance-free aspect. All wood returns are treated with a special process to make them rot-resistant. The interior comes with a stain-grade wood, or you can paint them. Jeld-Wen is very flexible in their design shapes and mull patterns, giving homeowners a lot of options."

Sub-Floors

The AdvanTech Flooring and Sheathing panels from Huber Engineered Woods are structural panels bonded with a proprietary resin that provides more water-resistance and stability than plywood. The panels are used for both single-layer and sub-floor applications as well as roof sheathing. AdvanTech provides a 50-year limited warranty. Click here for more information

IN MY OWN WORDS

"This has been one of my favorite building industry advances. AdvanTech installs easily and is waterproof. The old plywood sub-floors had to be replaced when they got wet, but not with AdvanTech. This material seems to stand up to just about anything."

Heatilator Fireplaces

The latest line of fireplaces from Heatilator is available as a direct vent or b-vent configuration in 36- and 42-inch sizes. The facades are available in a standard refractory pattern or a weathered option and also feature a larger log size. The company's Icon series features a 52-inch front. Fronts available: modernist, Arts & Crafts and Jamestown. Click here for more information

IN MY OWN WORDS

"For years we looked for a pre-fabricated fireplace that had an attractive appearance. The Heatilator Icon series looks much larger than what we were used to due to the taller opening. There is a 52-inch unit that looks huge and works well in large living spaces."

Delta Plumbing

The Asian-influenced, minimalist Rhythm faucet from Delta Faucet Co.'s Urban Collection has a variety of single- and dual-handle configurations, including a wall mount. Design options also include a single-handle joystick faucet. The line also offers the European-inspired Grail kitchen faucet and geometric Arzo. Click here for more information

IN MY OWN WORDS

"We have found that Delta provides a large selection of fixtures that fit the same rough-in valves. This gives the home buyer more flexibility to choose something that matches their décor, especially if they are purchasing a spec home that has already been sheet-rocked."

Mold Prevention

Preventing mold growth with products like Bora-Care with a mold-care system from Nisus combines an insecticide and fungicide with the mold control of the Mold-Care. The company offers 25-year product replacement warranty for certified providers. DeJiacomo uses a firm called Mold Prevention Services.

IN MY OWN WORDS

"With all the issues around mold today, we have taken a step for prevention. Before insulation, we have all of the wood in the basement level sprayed with a mold inhibitor. The treatment also comes with a repair warranty. It is nice for that little extra peace of mind."
